This is another book Descended By Blood by Angeline Kace that I chose not to read the synopsis on before I dove into it. Sometimes the synopsis just gives too much away about the book before you even read it, so I try to just avoid them (along with other reviews) before I begin reading. I like to be surprised, so I went into this book sort of blind, only knowing that it had paranormal elements and was YA.
I’ll admit it – I didn’t really like the main character, Brooke, in the beginning. Actually, I didn’t like any of the characters at first. I didn’t really know where the story was headed and I found it really difficult to connect with the characters. Brooke started dating Jaren, the guy she had a crush on for some time, and that’s basically what the story focused on; not exactly exciting to me. However, once the attack happens (which is mentioned in the synopsis), Brooke becomes a lot more interesting and there was more depth to her from that point on. Basically she turned into an incredible, strong, sassy main character that I could connect with and relate to. I think her friend, Kaitlynn was a great addition; she was really the only one Brooke could count on 100% of the time and she kept her grounded. I never really got Brooke’s infatuation with Jaren. Sure, he did have some sweet moments; coincidentally, one of my favorite quotes has to do with Jaren (but we’ll get to that later). By far my favorite character in the book though was Mirko, the guy who was hired to protect Brooke from the people trying to kill her. He was smart, sexy, quick-witted…pretty much everything you could want in a guy. I don’t know about Brooke, but I fell in love with him right away! I think there was a lot more depth to him than there was with Jaren, but maybe that has to do with all of the things Mirko experienced in his life.
Oh aren’t love triangles always sizzle? It’s probably no surprise to anyone that I am completely, 110% team Mirko! I swear he and Jaren are not even on the same playing field in my book. On the other hand, Brooke did genuinely have feelings for Jaren and had pined after him for a long time before they actually got together, so I can see why she’s so smitten with him. Actually, one of the sweetest moments in the book was one she had with Jaren
